July 21st, 1861, Gen. Thomas Jonathan Jackson led his brigade of Virginians into the contest at First Manassas. The Southern line was weakening and it would be these men who would save the Confederacy from sure defeat. A soldier of the 4th Virginia recounted that the General ordered them to "Charge and Drive Them To Washington".   The First National Confederate flag is shown in the foreground.  The Confederate army often changed flag patterns because some, as this one did, could be mistaken for a Union flag in the distance.
