 When the 69th New York answered President Lincoln’s call for volunteers, Thomas Francis Meagher organized the Zouaves, which was designated Company K of Corcoran’s unit. They were considered  fierce fighters and under Colonel Michael Corcoran, became very famous and were in every important battle. The regimental motto of the 69th New York was “Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked.”
